Various resources to help with Ocean Acidification and Climate Change
6 min. video – review of Global warming – pretty good
briefly Includes carbon isotopes – thermal expansion, ocean acidification, albedo effect etc.
Excellent Presentation on the Carbon Cycle and Climate Change by Jamie Bloom

Ocean Acidification lessons available online – brief review
- Monterey Bay Aquarium lesson 2 – 45 min periods
Part 1 using serial dilution activity to explain pH scale
Part 2 – CO2 from a blown balloon added to seawater, distilled water pH changes observed – also shells in acid
2. CPalms lesson for Honors or AP Chem
5 days – lessons for students with prior knowledge of acid/base PH etc. – 1 day lab
Written for pH probes but could use pH strip, Includes effects of buffering
Outline and Student lab, teacher notes Printed for portfolio
11 slide PPT Changing_World_Oceans includes excellent 3 min video
Printed: Outline, Lab
3. Five 5E lessons for HS chem – 3/5 ppt
Lesson 1 uses Phet Acid/Base Simulations – good simulation with pH paper and a probe
BUT the student questions for simulation don’t make sense
– good lab Acid-BaseWebLabPhET (Updated)
Printed: OUTLINE , 5E lesson plan for LESSON 3 – simple lab with household chemicals

Great hands on activities – mostly grade 5-8
Impacts of Carbonated Sea Water on Mussel and Oyster Shells
This lesson focuses on understanding the impacts of acidified seawater on mussel and oyster shells. Students will run experiments exposing shells with seawater at different levels of acidity representing current and potential future ocean conditions.
Ocean Acidification Dry Ice Demonstration
This demonstration uses cabbage juice as a pH indicator and shows how dry ice can change the acidity of seawater.Watch how dropping dry ice into water makes the water more acidic in front of your eyes as the cabbage juice changes color from blue to red.

From a NOAA webinar – 4 x 60 min lessons which include a brief review of the whole climate change problem and some good videos
8. These need data at www.dataintheclassroom.org currently being revamped – Maybe next year
